Common Questions
Do skylights leak?
Skylights have come a long way; they’re no longer the old, leaky bubble domes you might remember. Modern skylights are built to last and stay watertight when installed correctly. With our professional installation and timely maintenance/ replacement, your skylight will remain leak-free and reliable for years to come.
Is a skylight plastic?
VELUX skylights are made with durable, shatter-resistant glass for long-lasting performance and safety. Designed to withstand the elements, each skylight comes backed by a 10-year warranty for added peace of mind. Sun Tunnel domes are made of strong Acrylic.
What is the lifespan of a skylight?
Modern Velux Skylights are built to last 20-30 years! Many survive long after this time period, however it's still best to replace after about 30 years to keep up with new codes. Just think of how much skylights have changed in the last 30 years. Its time to get those bubble skylights replaced!
How do I maintain my skylight?
The best way to maintaining your skylight is getting it installed right the first time! Thereafter, maintenance is mostly timely replacement. The best time to replace a skylight is when you replace your roof, around every 20-30 years. This saves the skylight from unnecessary adjustments, and saves you from extra labour costs!
Sun bleaching or heat loss, how do I stop it?
Good news, VELUX Skylights have these covered. VELUX skylights hold the energy-efficient label of ENERGY STAR®. The Low-E glass and light filtering blind options block out 95% to 99% of UV rays, helping to reduce the heat coming or leaving a home. The idea that skylights overexpose a home isn't true anymore in newer skylights.
How do skylights hold up against Canadian weather?
The most common weather-related threat to skylights is hail and snow. VELUX skylights undergo rigorous testing to ensure they can withstand even the most severe hailstorms. Their glass is built tough and backed by a 10-year hail breakage warranty. Snow is also a challenge, not because of weight, but because buildup can cause ice damming. On low pitch roofs, we install more ice and water shield under the shingles to protect your home.
Are there rain sensors on opening skylights?
Yes! Should you forget about your opening skylight in a rainstorm, VELUX has you covered. Their Solar Powered Fresh Air Skylights and Electric Fresh Air Skylights have fully integrated rain sensors included with the skylight. There is also a manual chain available to unlatch from the skylight to close it for peace of mind.
How do I maintain my sun-tunnel?
Sun tunnel maintenance is super simple. Aside from regular maintenance like skylights, Sun Tunnel diffuser can be easily removed with a small twist. Should you see any moisture inside your sun tunnel, no need to be alarmed. Condensation can occur with rapid changes in temperature, and a simple wipe with a cloth should do the trick.
